Specsavers Openshaw hosts school workshop to put focus on eye health careers

26 June 2018

To encourage budding young opticians to pursue a career in eye health, Specsavers in Openshaw has hosted a careers workshop at St Hilda’s CE High School in Liverpool.

On Monday, 4 June, pupils aged 15 to 16 taking their GCSE examinations, were invited to attend the workshop to learn more about the opportunities to start a career in the field.

During the event, pupils met with dispensing opticians to hear about their experiences and learn about the different paths into eye health.

The workshop comprised of a variety of fun and engaging sessions, including a unique opportunity to try on spectacles which created an optical illusion of a cataract, and hands-on problem solving activities which placed pupils in the position of senior management.

The Specsavers Openshaw team is now reaching out to other schools in Greater Manchester to deliver the workshop in local schools across the region.

Store director Rachel Harrison says: ‘It has been fantastic to work with the pupils at St Hilda’s CE High School.

‘We strongly believe that by investing in the young workforce, we are helping to encourage a motivated and productive local community, while encouraging students to consider a career in eye health.

‘Our team has a huge amount of expertise and experience, and it’s excellent to be able to share this to and hopefully inspire the next generation to join us.’
